200 years of Mexican Glory

Mexican Republic marks the 200th years of its independence this year. 200 years back Mexico had achieved its independence from Spain and the Mexican Consulate in St. Paul has grand plans to celebrate the occasion. It has joined hands with Twin Cities art organisation and all through the year they will be hosting and organising events that will help re-imagine Mexico. Among the other events, VocalEssence will be presenting a concert on May 25th at St. Mary’s Basilica and till May 28th Intermedia Arts will host various special visuals.

Well where did this idea of re-imagining Mexico emanate from? It was the idea of Philip Brunelle, the artistic director of VocalEssence who says that when he first thought about a program of Mexican composers, he was bemused with the fact that there aren’t many who know about the quintessential Mexican culture or its history. So he decided to host Marachi bands and performances by composers who are residents of Mexico. This is in sheer contrast to concerts by Mexican composers who have moved to USA some 20 years ago.

Intermedia Arts is hosting Independence and Revolution: 1810/1910/2010, which is a fantabulous show of six present day Mexican artists from the various fields of folk art, digital photography, abstract painting, and portraiture. By now you would have guessed the importance of the the exhibit's subtitle's dates. These represent three important periods in Mexican history: the freedom from Spain in 1810, the revolution of 1910 that bought dictatorship to an end and the contemporary Mexico.
